How we know
Every award claim on this site comes from a published source. This page explains what we cover, how we word an award, and what we do when the record is incomplete.
What we cover
We cover English-language cookbooks recognized by the James Beard and IACP awards, including earlier programs that came before them. Awards stay with the program that gave them; we never rename an older award to make a history look tidier.
How awards are worded
Winner, finalist, nominee, runner-up, and other results keep the award's own wording. We group similar results so you can browse them together, but a nominee is never shown as a winner. If an award year has nominees but no recorded winner, we say so.
Where the evidence comes from
Each award claim links to the source we checked — usually the award program's own announcement or archive. If a source link later changes, the citation stays with the claim.
When records are incomplete
Some award years are still being verified. When that happens we say the records are incomplete rather than guessing at a winner or hiding the year. A year with no awards is shown as a year with no awards.
We do not describe any award year as complete at launch. A year with an open high-severity research gap says so on its page, and its result count is a floor, not a claim that every award is listed.
Editorial independence
Buying links are disclosed where you choose a seller, and merchants never affect which books appear, how they are ordered, or what award they hold. Our only loyalty is to the published record.
